Jennings was ambushed on her way to church on January 21, 2024, and shot in the back of the head and the arm. Family, friends, and concerned community members rallied to rescue her after the attack, rushing her to Rumuruti Sub-County Hospital and subsequently transferring her to Pope Benedict XVI Hospital.
Following the crime, security forces in Laikipia West intensified efforts to apprehend illegal grazers linked to the shooting, while residents demanded enhanced security measures in areas plagued by conflicts between landowners and trespassers.
The police have made progress in the investigation with the arrest of six suspects. Laikipia West Sub-County Police Commander Benjamin Muhia said they were searching for more suspects as well as the weapon used in the attack.
The Rumuruti Business Community condemned the shooting, highlighting Jennings' legal battles with illegal grazers who persistently trespassed on her ranch. Community chairman Fredrick Mwangi said criminals earlier targeted Jennings for highlighting illegal grazers' encroachment on her expansive farm.
Noting that such incidents recur, Mbugua urged authorities to address the growing insecurity in the area.
Salama Ward MCA Mugambi Gatati called for justice, urging the government to ensure the suspects are quickly brought to justice.
